Personally, developing my own HIE is just another part of the creative
process that I control to get the results I want to get. I wouldn't have it
any other way. I've never ruined a roll completely, except by using the
wrong developer or concentration. Some of that has been "reversable"
at the printing stage, some not. Again, its all part of learning how to work
with the film. I wouldn't trade that knowledge I've gained for anything.
And unlike some labs, I've never lost a roll.... ;=)
Developing can be done in a bathroom, with minimal cost for equipment. If
you can afford a good camera and the film itself, the price of the
chemistry and a few storage jugs and a decend developing tank are
peanuts.
The only time I've taken any of my negatives to a local lab was when I
wanted a batch of cheap prints to proof the images from. And with a
color printer, I can get some nice "sepia" prints if the person controlling
the printer takes the time to adjust the color balance. More often, I get
purple&white prints, which look funny but still show me know what the
image looks like.
There, that's my 2 cents worth, before taxes of course! :=)
