My first two rolls of HIE are waiting in the freezer for better
weather... Obviously I'm not an expert on this subject but I can guess
what went wrong...
1) You set your camera to 50 ASA and metered through the red filter ??
The 50 ASA setting includes a correction for a red filter (something
like a 25,29...) so you should meter without the filter in place with
   the 50 ASA setting.
2) The HIE records more light (in the IR spectrum of course...) than the
meter of your camera and our eyes might be aware of. With my first
roll of any IR-film I try to get a starting point for ASA settings on
my camera. My plans for HIE: Set the meter to 200 ASA. Meter throught
Heliopan #29. Bracket +1,0,-1,-2. (Scenery with lot of reflected
   IR-light). Check the results...
The resulting ASA settings should change with other cameras (or any
other meter), the scenery (amount of reflected IR) and the time of
   year.

So much for the exposure...

Cheers, Oliver
