As a suggestion, you could fire a strobe through a #25
red filter and use a film like Agfa or Ilford's 400 speed
"quasi-infrared" filter. This would drastically reduce
the flash's impact while allowing pretty strong illumination
in the red and near infrared. TMZ does not have particularly
great sensitivity in the extended red, but 2475 Recording
Film does. It has about the same real (read shadow) sensitivity,
though with MUCH less even grain. In a developer like Diafine,
EI3200 should be possible, and maybe EI 1600 in Microphen.
In either case, shadow detail should be so good as not to
look "pushed". The extended red sensitivity would allow
you to gain maximum possible benifit from the (normally)
incandescent stage lighting.
