My infrared print like memory remembers something about this in Ansel
Adam's "The Print."

Though it's probably not what you are looking for, you can do the thing
where an area of the print is covered with rubber cement, I think, which
you remove after toning.

In order to get a split tone, I use a hardening fixer for the first fix,
and then use sepia toner. You don't bleach it all the way. It might even
work without the hardening fixer. It gives warmer tones to the highlights,
but keeps a good black in dark tones.

Anyone using sepia or selenium toner should practice their best safety
procedures. Selenium is quite toxic so use gloves if you can, definitely
don't do it with any cuts, wash your work area well, etc. The smell from
sepia can be pretty bad and I would recommend doing it in daylight in an
area with some ventilation. I usually print one day and do toning/second
fix/final wash on another day.
