Don't bother with the hardening fixer, just control your bleach time. A
number of well known photographers use this method. Michael Kenna and Anton
Corbijn come immediately to mind. Lynn Davis tones her huge Middle Eastern
ruins photographs in gold toner and selenium. One of the better papers I've
found for toning is Zone VI Brilliant paper. I've used it for selenium,
gold, selenium and polytoner, and sepia.
