My experience with diafine has been that rather than giving such a great
Increase in speed, it just seems to enable the film to perform adequately
at the nominal rating, whereas most developers require a decrease in the
practical ISO index in order to produce the kind of shadow saturation my
eye requires. That said, it's a great developer. I haven't tried HIE
with it but would certainly like to hear about anyone's experience. I am
very partial to split developers.
My suspicion, though, is that there may not be enough retention in the
emulsion of the A part to supply adequate reducer to satisfy the needs of
the exposed silver. This may be an advantage, though, in that it could
make it a lot less likely that the highlights will block up. That is, it
could have a compensating effect, which may be very useful.
