In general, who could disagree? Warning the unsuspecting reader about an
error-laden book is our responsibility - so the list should certainly be
one way to do that. But also, a direct critique to the source of the
misinformation may induce some kind of correction, errata, or at least make
them more circumspect the next time they publish. As long as we remain
civil, I really don't see this as a question of avoiding hurt personal
feelings. Once a book is published, it's fair game for review.
Now how can I say this in the most respectful way possible? During and
after the seminar I attended on 8/20/97 with Teresa Airey, a few others
and I attempted to "question" the basis for some of the unreasonable
sounding explanations - directly and politely as you would have us do. She
seems a very nice person, but I'm afraid she just didn't absorb the
technical content of the questions, at least in that seminar environment.
I am not overly hopeful about how much rethinking and revision one could
encourage through direct contact. Perhaps the strong criticism from this
list would serve to make her and the publisher more careful to stay
within the area of real expertise the next time.
