Jason,
Here's my two cents worth:
As far as I am concerned infrared photography should be done as the name
implies -- with infrared light. To do this requires the use of HIE and an 87C
filter. Plain and simple. The only compromise to this is the 89 series which
is a deep, dark, blood-like color. Neither filter will allow through the lens
viewing, however. So, what's the solution.
I've read a lot of comments on this board about focusing problems, focus
points, etc. etc.. You read a lot about LED problems in some of the Canon,
and other, cameras. Try using the KISS method. Find something simple and use
it.
For me that's an old Olympus wide-e rangefinder. It has a simple,
straightforward, no battery required CdS, or is it Selenium, meter in it. I
rate the film at 100ASA, use the EV rating given by the meter for my exposure
and bracket in full stops. I use hyperfocal distance focusing based on the f-
stop I choose from the meter recommendations. The filter on the camera is a
49mm 87c attached to the small diameter lens by 3 step rings. Simple and
straightforward. Also straightforward is my development. I use HC110 out of
the bottle as a concentrate and mixed 1:31 with distilled water. HC110 was
good enough for Ansel then it's good enough for me. Printing is another story
all together.
The point is to just get started. Each and every roll I pull out of the tank
is an exhilarating experience for me. I marvel at the breadth of tones
captured by a film that sees light that I cannot. It is a true wonder for me
and a I relish in it. I guess that's why I am such a stickler for the opaque,
87c, filter and HIE. It brings me images that I cannot get with any other
film and filter combination. NONE.
Regards,
Mike Brouphy
