Sorry for the lateness of this reply but I have only just come
back after Easter.
I found myself in a very similar position a few years ago, I
had moved from a OM-10 to a EOS-100, no comparison
in my opinion. But this did mean the problem with HIE, as
over half of the film I shoot is IR.
I tried a roll and Yes there is very little fogging on the
actual image part of the negative, but as far as I was concerned
it was still there and was not of a predictable amount.
The answer I came up with was to buy a Cannon EF-M.
This has all I need for most of my IR work on 35mm. I use
the inbuilt lightmeter for most of the shot's and never had a
problem. I know that the meter is not greatly accurate but it's
not measuring IR light anyway and I think we all bracket
anyway (?).
I think this is a great cheap camera for IR work,
even the pressure plate is perfectly smooth. All this for
about 60 GPB much cheaper in the States ($50 ?)I am
sure, this meant I also did not need to buy any new lens !
The only thing that gets me with the camera is the fact that
you start taking the photo's at the end of the film and
finish at the front ! Not easy when comparing notes
on the different frames :-)

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about starter SLR's for IR.
I've researched a lot since my last post, and I'm seriously considering
a
Canon EOS 630. This is because I already have a Canon EOS Rebel and
a lens. The 630 uses a mechanical counter, and I like the illuminated
LCD
for night shots. I found that the OM-1, Nikon FE, FM, F2, etc, might be
too expensive considering that I can't use my lens on them.
I won't ask the terrible Nikon vs Canon question, but I will ask whether
there is a very good reason NOT to go with the EOS line (assuming I stay
away from the IR counters). I ask becuase I notice from your websites
that none you "real" IR photographers are using any EOS equipment other
than EOS-1(n). So, is the Canon EOS 630 any good? Thanks in advance.
