I don't think Man Ray "discovered" solarization. He may have
re-discovered it, or simply said he did. He called them "Ray-O-Graphs"
after himself. This little caveat also speaks to the tremendous ego Ray
had, so be careful what you believe from artists' autobiographies. The
solarization process was actually discovered by a Frenchman named
Sabbattier around 1870, and you'll often find it listed in photography
textbooks under his name.
