The very closest I've come to an 'invisible' IR flash was with military
type-one (m) bulbs over thirty years ago. These black bulbs were successful
largely because of their long burn time as opposed to a modern electronic
flash's brief, but intense light which is more visible.

Most recently I've resorted to putting a Leitz IR glass filter over the
flash. This minimizes the visibility but is still not perfect. (Does anyone
else have this filter? It is apparently quite rare.)
