I corresponded with Sunpak some time ago. The IR module is a convential
flash with a filter over it. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that if
you looked at the flash when it was fired, there would be a dull glow like
other flashes with visible light filters over them.

There are a variety of infrared continuous lights that are intended for
surveillance video. Perhaps you could buy an inexpensive one and remove the
light source and cobble in a flash. In all probability, even those will
have visible light pass with an intense light from a flash. If the light
source is placed where the subject wouldn't be looking, what difference
does it make?
Here are a couple urls that might lead you to what you want,
http://www.misty.com/~don/index.html flash stuff
http://www.stryker-ent.com/ spy/surveillance stuff
and if my memory serves me correctly, http://www.infrared.com had light
sources, but I'm not sure.
