Re: New HIE Problem (Lines)

Ian:
My experience has been that those sprocket related lines are from over
agitation, not under agitation. Mine were very much reduced by switching
to Xtol from D76 and decreasing agitation from 5sec/4 to 5 inversions every
30 sec to about 3sec/2 gentle inversions every minute with a rotation
(instead of inversion) at the missed 30sec points.
I am sure this is more complicated than necessary and I have had to
lengthen the process time to compensate for the reduced agitation (still
closing in on the best trade off there). It is certain however that those
sprocket related streaks of over-development are much less visible now.
I switched away from D76 when I was using Kodak's original recommended
process time of around 11min. That, according to Kodak techs, was intended
to give a contrast index (CI) of 1.05 (very high!). They did this because
they knew we wanted to see those great ethereal halo effects around the
blocked-up highlights. Xtol, on the other hand, if processed by their
recommendation, may give a CI as low as 0.58 (rather low). Now they have
backed off on the D76 recommended time so that the CI is 0.80. Maybe I'll
go back and try D76 again with the less violent agitation regimen, given
this new insight.

					Good luck,
