Product experiences

A while back I said I'd post my experiences with the Night-Owl NZT-1 IR
night scope. I'd hoped to use it to "preview" IR scenes before photographing
them. Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that the unit
works fine as a viewer -- and is one of the cheapest around ($149US or
$169US with T-mount adapter). But forget about using this unit for night
photography. As with most generation 1 image intensifier tubes, only the
very center of the image is undistorted and in relative focus. Using the
supplied camera adapter I was absolutely unable to focus on any image. It
was like trying to focus with vaseline smeared all over my lens. Forget it.
Changing bags: I have found the "Dotline" brand of changing bags are safe
for IR films. I shot 3 rolls of HIE at Hoover Dam and changed film in full
daylight using this bag. It worked fine.
Happy shooting,
Theo Benson
