This befuddles me.  I've shot at least three dozen rolls of HIE and developed
them with Xtol without any problems whatsoever.  I used to use D76, which did an
excellent job, but switched to Xtol about a year or so back.  I must assume that
"no success" means that you did not get the results for which you were looking. 
If this is the case, then that makes all kinds of sense (after all, we are all
looking for something different).  Hopefully, you do not mean that no (or
insufficient) image was formed.
