I agree with Jason here, SONY built a great IR camcorder in the original
Nightshot version. I do believe it exceeds the IR sensitivity of Kodak HIE
film!
I use mine with a Hoya R72 and he's right-no sign of light loss at all, and
absolutely gorgeous tonal rendition, escpecially in Hi8 mode. I bought
mine, a TRV 917 just before the "nude filter" press release. I've never
tried to see if that's true...I suspect it was a careful leak from SONY to
boost sagging camcorder sales, but then I watch the X-Files. Mine has a
standard viewfinder without the LCD screen, and it does not bother me, but
that's just personal preference. Nightshot is a feature worth checking out.
I doubt it will be a part of the next generation SONY camcorders, at least
not those marketed in the U.S.
