I agree with George. It's not the ideal way to start with I R but if you do,
be prepared to experiment widely and test methodically. I've experimented a
lot with filtered flash and open flash with filtered lens. My results varied
a lot depending on location, subject and as you would expect, distance. A
possible advantage of using an opaque IR filter on the flash, depending on
what and where you are shooting, is that the flash is not visible (apart
from a dull red blip if one looks straight at it). This can be useful
shooting on the subway or in the street at night etc but testing is
essential for both exposure and contrast.
