The Paterson tanks work just fine for me; and, providing they are loaded
in complete darkness, there is no problem in developing HIE with the
normal room lights on - just like normal B&W films in fact.  I followed
Kodak's "process in total darkness" advice the very first time; but,
after mis-timing the development and spilling chemicals all over the
floor, I applied the "suck it and see" methodology and have never looked
back!

I've certainly had some pretty bogus IR advice from shop assistants in
the past.  For example: "You should wrap your Canon A1 up in tin-foil
after loading the film to stop IR leakage" and "You should wear gloves
while handling the film to stop the heat from your hand fogging it". 
Does anyone else have any more such gems?  We could compile a list of
them...
