I cannot speak to the problems with the 4x5 film. In 35mm, however, i
believe that many of the spots on negs are caused by air bubbles. It was a
problem I had at one time even when I was using distilled water for mixing
developer. I solved it by presoaking and rapping the tank hard and more
than once. It also causes a subtle reduction in highlight density. If you
do presoak, you should increase development time 20-30 seconds. For an
explanation check Ansel Adams' "The Negative."
If you wonder about your own, get out a loupe and take a closer look. Air
bubbles have a characteristic look which I can't really explain with words.
I imagine exploding gas bubbles would have their own look. IMO creating
those bubbles with stop bath is probably harder than one would imagine.
