There are a number of web sites providing free chemical safety information.
Many of these can be found by searching for MSDS. Material Safety Data
Sheets provide information on toxicity, handling procedures, etc. They are,
however, somewhat cumbersome to read because they are oriented for handling
of large amounts of chemical. Nonetheless, one can usually get a fairly
good feeling for the sorts of precautions to be used as an individual. A
promising new site with links to other established MSDS databases is:

You can search by chemical name.

Let's save the mysteries for the artistic end of the photography, not the
scientific.
