tonering Art Classic in selenium

Att. Tim Rudman and other tonering fan,
I carried on with tonering and followed your advice to use Art Classic
paper in selenium toner, the 'hot & strong way'. Dilution 1+2 at 40
degrees C. controlled by the dishwarmer. The original colour of the
picture was pinky/brown with an average tone scala. In the darkroom Art
Classic appeared to be more sensitive than Sterling Lith paper. I
arrived at lower exposure times. Returning to tonering: putting the
paper in the dish the process started almost immediately and within a
matter of seconds (no more than 5) the picture turned 'black and white'
and I saw some gray 'flashing by'. It went so fast that I could hardly
determine what was going on! After the flashy grayish thing the picture
got 'to rest' and was brownish. It might be, that the brown got a bit
more intense and that was the end. I kept the paper for about 30 minutes
in the toner and did not notice any more change. After rinsing and
drying the colour was brown, the pinky element had gone. You can imaging
that I was a bit disappointed as there was nothing like the process you
describe in your book. Funny: before tonering there was no white frame
around the picture, it had almost the same colour as the picture itself.
However after tonering I got a white frame as with ordinary pictures. I
always use the enlarger easel to get a nice white frame around. Also
when Art Classic is wet the backside shows grey spots which disappear
when dried. All new experiences! So now my questions:
1. what is the duration of the tonering process using the hot & strong
method? Should I have carried on after 30 minutes?
2. is the process always so 'flashing' at the start? There is absolutely
no opportunity for snatching.
3. is the 'frame-thing' mentioned above a normal?
I might try Kentona as well!? I almost forgot: I used Kodak Rapid
Selenium toner. Is this the right toner for this h&s process?
Greetings,
Jaap Los
