Neil,

Spotone dyes come in at least five shades including one that is reddish brown.
 I can't tell from your message whether you have tried any of these.  When I
started toning papers that gave a reddish-brown tone, I bought a bottle of the
#B (Brown); that seemed to work for me.  Give it a try if you haven't already.
