Hi!
I've used a formula of gum arabic and Japanese charcoal stick. I'm
trying just now to remember it because I'm starting to print again. I'll
find it somewhere and repost.
As I recall it worked on the selenium and gold toned archival
prints I was attempting on fiber based graded papers like Ilfobrome
and Galerie. I remember I had this rectangular stick with oriental
lettering in gold. I think I ground up the stuff in a mortar and
cooked it with the gum arabic.
The formula was from a book; possibly one of the original
Ansel Adams' Photo Series Books, maybe "The Print"? Maybe someone
on the new zone system list can help.
Cheers,
Rich Lahrson
