black & white quickcams

Hi Everyone;
I recently bought myself, used, a B&W qucikcam. No longer made, the new
ones are all colour.

Originally I bought it because I have seen people use them in my other
haobby - astornomy. What you have to do is take off the lens assembly,
take out the infrared filter (a deep blue piece of glass), and then mount
it on the end of telescope.

Well I thought I woudl try some daytime shots as a dry run through my
scope,a nd what a surprize - green grass, trees and bushes come out dazling
white.
Now I've shot the Ilford, Agfa, the Konica and both HSI & HIE,a nd I have
to say the images off this quickcam look just like a print off a HIE
negative, except not quite as grainy. :)

It has made me to think that most of the CCD chips used in video cameras
must be IR sensitive. Furthermore, if you hunt around, you can find used,
B&W security video cameras at surplus supply stores, and sometiems on the
web. It makes me wonder (if somebody already has not done so), if you
couldn't buy one of these cameras, take it apart, pull out any IR filter,
slap in a nice deep red one in it's palce, and have a ball with these things.

I heard about the suppoedly "x-ray vision" Sony cameras (gave me a good
laugh), but I think all of these cameras are IR ready - just have to yank
that filter out. You probally woudl not want to do this with a new,
expensive camera, but an old "junker", makes you think, eh?
