Yes this is true.  They put in IR blocking filters to tone down the
color distortion
from the IR sensitivity.

No yanking necessary, you just flip a switch on the side and it slides
out
of the way. 
BTW the cds cell in my older 35 mm camera is more sensitive to IR than
the sbc cell with the bluish green filter over it in my newer slr.
