Re: #25 vs. IR filter

>From what I have read on everyone's websites and here on the list, if an
87a filter is used, the camera should be set at ASA 25, and just meter
TTL at f11. Would most agree that this is the general concensus? I'm
using a BTR filter setup, but haven't actually shot a roll yet with an
87a. I always use a #25, and manually set the camera at 1/125 @ f11.
So-so results. Seems like shadier shots are always on the underexposed
side, and full sun shots lean dangerously close to overexposed, but I
realize that this is because of my lack of experience. I try to bracket,
but it seems to make little difference. Of course, up until now I have
had to put DX labels on the canister, which are coded at ASA200, because
I own an N60 that will not even work with film that is not DX coded, and
there isn't even a way to manually set the ASA rating of the film. So, I
have to then overexpose by a stop to get it down to the ASA 100 that I
understand to be a good starting point for using a 1/125 @ f11 setting.
I will be trying my "new" Nikon FG out this weekend (able to set it to
25 ASA! yipee!), and want to make sure I'm in the ballpark as far as
proper exposure goes. I've been so disappointed with much of the HIE I
have shot so far. I bought a 2nd body(the FG) JUST for IR work.
Hopefully things will improve some. One more question - if I were to
use a #25 filter, what would be considered best - meter through the
filter at a certain ASA rating, or just continue on with my
shot-in-the-dark 1/125th @ f11 that everyone seems to be so confident
with? Seems like the shutter times are so long when I meter TTL. What
are common TTL readings when a #25 is used at ASA 200, and what are the
readings when the ASA is set at 25 (for an average bright, outdoor sunny
scene.)
Thanks, as always, for allowing me to ramble and for all the helpful
replies that you all take the time to send! I'm just getting so
frustrated. I know you all have very useful information on your sites,
but when I try to apply it things never seem to work out the way I wish!
