auto focus & IR
I don't recall seeing a thread on this before so I'm diving in. My
students are starting to show up with Canon EOS cameras a lot lately.
Must have been a sale recently! Anyway, we understand there'll be a
fogged line across the top of the negative and they have managed to
shoot wide so as to be able to crop that out in the print.
What we also noticed is that the auto focus (presumably IR) is spot on
most of the time with the HIE in the camera. The lenses aren't marked
with an IR focus mark and I seem to remember the manual saying not to
bother using IR film in the EOS camera. Anyone else notice the auto
focusing being correct in these cameras?
Also:
The last two semesters we saw a lot of the infamous air bubble marks
on our HIE. I sent a strip to Kodak and they responded with a set of
revised processing instructions. We tried those last night with great
success. They are :
1) Do not use a presoak
2) Drop the film into the tank and developer rather than pour
developer into the tank (requires total darkness of course)
3) Immediately rap the tank to dislodge bubbles before beginning
agitation
4) Everything else is as always
We were also advised to add developing time to the newer charts
(remember when Kodak suddenly changed their recommended HIE times from
12.5 to 8.5 minutes at 68F?). I personally added one minute and the
density change was insignificant but the contrast was oh so much
better for my taste. It's just a small test on one night but it was
an immediate improvement over the last terms.
