I've put mine through regular airport carry-on baggage scanners, I haven't
noticed any problems with HIE.  The lead lined bag helps in any case.

Avoid putting it in your luggage, since many airport baggage X-Rays in many
major airports now are really, really deadly and will ruin regular film.
Also I've been told by airport staff the metal detectors will also have an
effect on film.

It's a real hassle to have it hand inspected since they NEED to open it, of
course you can't, and then insist on a visual inspection.  I was held back
and almost missed my flight the first time since I didn't want to risk
putting it through any X-Ray.  And this was in a Canadian airport going
between Canadian cities.

To have some real fun at airports.  Buy a pack of 24 slices of processed
cheese singles slices, a pack of batteries, and a small alarm clock.  Wrap
them all together with the cord of your hair dryer.  Also remember to load
your luggage with large amounts of Christmas pudding, and latex operating
gloves, remember to put a light bulb in there as well.  Loads of fun!
