Don,

Are you tray processing your HSI?
Most peole like to tray-process sheet film with with the emulsion side up.
As a result, the sheet being "pulled out" from the bottom, is most likely
to be scratched by the corner of the sheet just on top of that one. When I
tray process HSI I always place the film emulsion side down. There are some
who will claim that I'm more likely to get uneven development due to
"bubbles" but I have not found this to be a problem.
A second place where scratches occur, is as the film is being either loaded
or unloaded from a film holder that has either not been meticulously
cleaned before loading or used in a camera that has been exposed to a dusty
environment. Remember... remove the lensboard and the camera back, extend
the bellows of your camera fo full extension and clean the inside of the
bellows. Everytime the bellows is extended, air has to "enter" or the
bellows collapse... it brings with it an amazing amount of crap that will
settle on the inside surface of the bellows. As the bellows are adjusted,
in or out, there is the high probability that some of the dust particles
are becoming "airborne" and may very well be attracted to the emulsion of
the film.... dust particles "invisible" to the eye... but it always seems
to show up after exposure and processing.
