I also use Paterson tanks, with the adjustable reels for 35 mm and 120.
I've recently moved from Kindermann stainless reels and tanks because the
Paterson is much easier to load HIE in. After a few dozen rolls in the
tanks, I can say I've not seen the bubble issue.
>From an old habit, I use three plain water washes between the developer and
the fixer. Each wash cycle is for about 10 seconds, same temp as the
developer. Usually on the third rinse I'll add a little Kodak indicator
stop to prepare the film for the different PH of the fixer. I don't know if
this keeps some of the other gremlins out or not, but it always seems to
work with me.
