Filters with Konica... need suggestions!

I've been using a red 25 filter with Konica... I don't think the results are
as sharp as I wanted... and there's a lot of haze! I figure I needed a
lighter filter but then there won't be the sharp black/white contrast right?
But with a darker filter wouldn't there be more haze? See... I'm a little
lost ;-) I have an 87 filter but I know it doesn't work with Konica very
well like it does with Kodak!
Anyone know how to get better images? Should it be better if I took them all
at sunrise or sundown? I only ask because I can get outdated Konica for
about 2 dollars a roll and I've been using Kodak because I wasn't happy with
the outcome of the Konica film! I'd like to make my new hobby more
affordable since I'm a broke college student! ;-)
