Stan posts, on dedicated IR cameras ...
I agree with advise given to find an old rangefinder camera and adapt it. If
you can put up with the one-lens limitation and a squinty viewing system,
many older cameras are compact, cheap and good shooters.
Indeed, these are a viable option. I finally came up w/
a 87 filter and opted to shoot a roll of HIE thru it in
my old Canonet QL17 rangfinder (40mm f1.7 optics) Very
nice results and I could see :)
and ...
John Butterworth's suggestion for some older Nikon equipment may not work
out for two reasons: 1)The light meters are based on 1.35v mercury cells, no
longer available. AFAIK, the new replacements have a very short life.
IMHO, this reasoning is invalid as there is no need for ttl
metering w/ IR (IMHO, of course). Even w/ a working meter, it
seems to me that the calibration is mismatched to the high
%age of IR in the incoming light, especially w/ the opaque
IR filter types. I have done all my IR by working around the
suggested exposures on the film data sheets using manual
exposure. My main IR camera is an old Pentax H2 slr, made
well before any slr had internal metering (1959). I suppose if
one was doing studio work w/ incandescent light sources a series
of exposures would be the easiest way to determine the "best"
exposure for the set-up in question.
