IR Flash

I saw the recent posting on IR flash bulbs, and that reminded me of
something that you have all probably discussed, but perhaps not. Some time
ago I got hold of some scrap eighth inch IR filtering plexiglass acrylic
material. It's manufactured by Rohm & Haas Canada Inc, West Hill, Ontario,
M1E3T9. I cut a piece of this stuff and cobbled together a little slip-on
filter for an old Olympus flash unit. To my surprise, a standard flash puts
out enough IR to work well with HSI. I've used it occassionally for fill to
bring out the white in shaded foliage in the foreground, and have used it to
shoot in semi-dark conditions indoors too. The flash is quite inconspicuous
behind the filter -- just a red blip. I suspect you could do quite a lot
with this stuff if you had a mind too -- big studio flash filters, etc. If
you were careful, I think it could probably also be used as an optical
filter without degrading images too badly, though you'd be limited to
rangefinder cameras or scale focusing. I haven't tried that, though.
Leonard
