Hi fishman57!
Understand your problems with loading HIE on a plastic reel. I use a
standard Paterson tank and white plastic reel with the small steel balls
and I do not encounter the problems you describe. The film is very thin
and therefore I recommand to do following:
1. The reel must be absolutely dry and clean
2. Before loading always move the steel balls a little bit in their
housings (with your fingernail!). They sometimes tend to get a bit
sticky, so see to it that they can move freely.
3. Never push the film in! In stead turn one side of the reel in short
strokes back and forward. Make steady short movements.
4. There is no need to cut little corners from the film end if you
follow above rules.
Success!
Greetings,
Jaap Los
