I normally recommend (to my students) that their Paterson reels are best
cleaned on a relatively regular basis. Get a hold of your mother-in-law's
toothbrush and gently scrub the reels with HOT soapy water, followed by
an hour or so soak in a 1% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution to finish
removing the "scum" on the reels. Rinse well with HOT water and you should
be off to the races. I usually recommend that you cut the corner off the
leading corners. If the loading "fails", and you do not object to a
predevelopment soak, load the Paterson reel with everything immersed in a
pail/tub of water at temperature. The one "curse" of the plastic reels is
that they really need to be properly dry when loading.... but then they
don't break when you throw them at the wall in "disgust" 8-)
