 Not really. I had the same problem with my Minolta Dynax 600si. I just
 put some black self-adhesive plastic foil over the backplate. Now I got
 a pretty good IR camera :-)

I wonder if you could elaborate on the problem you originally had with your 
Minolta 600si?  I have the same camera and have not had a problem with the 
backplate causing any fogging.  Is there any difference between the Dynax 
(British version?) and the Maxxum (U.S. version)?
