XTOL; I've heard of this happening to others on usenet as well. I'm not
sure if the problem lies with the quality of the water used to mix the
developer (I don't use distilled water), or if there is a quality control
problem with xtol itself. All I know is that I've been developing film for
30 years, and I've never had this sort of problem except with XTOL. But
sometimes it works just fine. Go figure.

For those of you who have not yet become aware, there have been numerous
reports of problems with Xtol. Usually the problem is the lack of any
density in the negatives developed. I suggest a review of deju vu will give
you more information, but in a "nutshell" some older packages of Xtol (1
liter size) have had moisture leakage in package "A" causing it to "cake".
If you have such a package, return it to your dealer and they will replace
it. Others have reported problems with Xtol even without the caking problem.
Many theories have been advanced from the quality of water used to how the
chemical was stirred when mixing. On the other hand, many have reported NO
problems using Xtol (including myself) and swear by it. Those who have
experienced problems swear they will never use it again. What is the answer
to resolve this problem?? No one knows. Not even, it would seem, Kodak.
Frankly, for HIE in 35mm, I use TMax-RS 1:9 at 70 degrees for between 9 and
11 minutes and have been very happy with the results.
