It's not acutance that makes the "grains" look larger, it's the
clumping of them together. Results from Rodinal will vary greatly
depending on several factors, especially the dilution and the
frequency of agitation.

I don't know much about Xtol, but D76 doesn't contain anything that
will dissolve grains other that sodium sulfite. There is a relatively
low amount used and it is used as a preservative. It isn't
responsible for making the grain less noticeable. The only "solvent"
or fine grain developer available that I am aware of is Microdol-X.
Perhaps Ilford has a similar product.
