Clumping is part of it, but also what's being done to those grain clumps is
certainly another aspect.  As Rodinal leaves things alone, you results will
be higher acutance and more noticeable grain.

I believe that the sodium sulfite within D76 does indeed act as a silver
halide solvent.  I have used high accutance versions of D76 where the amount
of sodium sulfite is considerably reduced.  Works nicely.
