Dan,

Part of the problem was disposal arrangements for used mercury oxide
batteries. There was no recycling available in the UK and AFAIK the same
situation existed in Europe. The batteries coud be returned to the point of
supply and they were then supposed to be passed on to a recycling point.
With no facilities for recycling in place you have to ask what was
happening to the used batteries.

My guess is that some bulk quantities of used batteries were returned to
the manufacturers but that most of 'em ended up in domestic rubbish tips.

I have a few used batteries sitting in a jar at home - if anyone knows of a
recycling point then please let me know.
