Re: Stigmata

Hi Chris,
you will probably get a wealth of replies to your stigmata/blood
question, but since I've not yet received any, here's my $0.02 worth.
Whenever the term 'IR' is loosely used in the public arena, images that
usually jump to people's mind are green pictures from night vision goggles,
or thermal Infra-red imaging using specialised equipment then adding a bit
of excitement with false colour rendering (you know, many of the action/'hi
tech' movies show things such as this, I think it was in Terminator where
the imprint of someone's footprints could be seen where they heated the
ground!) etc.
However, with IR film, the recording medium is unique and will NOT detect
'heat' from a human body. Classic proof of this is that you would fog the
film just by holding it in the canister/packaging or simply having it at
room temperature.
It will only begin to detect IR radiation from hot bodies whose
temperatures are above at least 250 degrees celcius (about 480 deg. F) - eg
a hot stove element etc, which may not necessarily be visibly glowing.
Even then the exposure times are very long (many seconds or tens of
seconds).

So I guess in an effort to dispel the ongoing myth of what IR film can do,
the short answer to your question is , no unfortunately it won't pick up
warm blood.

Can anyone explain from a scientific point of view why the veins are darker
on IR film and not standard B&W film? Is it because the skin is
translucent to IR and so the dark vein structures are picked up better?

regards
Peter

One last question, in ref to the movie Stigmata that someone mentioned
a while back: if blood coursed out of a statue, warm, as it did in that
movie (I know, I know; it's weird) would it in actuality on infrared be
blacker?? Like veins of blood underneath skin does?
