That shouldn't be a problem, I'm sure I can manage IR-proof felt
of one sort or another.

It fits in my large Tamrac hip pack quite nicely.  It's certainly
heavier than my OM-1, but not too cumbersome -- I can carry it in
the hip pack while bicycling.  I generally use it without the
handle, triggering the shutter manually using the built-in lever
when I'm hand-holding, or using a long cable release on a tripod.
The handle is convenient if you're using it a lot in one
location, but adds to the bulk carrying it around.
