I would like to suggest that it is probably not the glass platen that prevents
IR from being detected by the scanner's sensor but rather a small IR abosrbing
filter placed or installed in the "imaging funnel" of the scanner ... just in
front of the lens assembly.
I have made quite satisfactory IR images by taking the scanning array out of a
hand scanner and placing it in the back of a 35mm camera. In the process the IR
blocking filter was, of course, left behind. Now the array is exposed to IR
rays and unless one has a light source low in IR output (such as most
fluorescent tubes) the image is not the best ... unless one uses a IR absorbing
filter on the lens! But the scanner can make IR records quite easily!
