I wonder if there is any developer that promotes grain clumping as
much as Rodinal. I'm not sure what you mean by "leaves the grain
alone." Acutance is a subject in and of itself and is probably more
related to the dilution and agitation of the developer and the edge
effect that is created.

Microdol-x is the only "solvent" developer that is commercially
available that i know about although perhaps photographer's formulary
has a competing product. D76 does not have a smoother look because
the grain is eaten away. There is no solvent in D76. Forget about the
very small amount of sodium sulfite that is added as a preservative.
Rodinal is the best developer in the world if you want really, really
grainy and chunky. Use it with the least amount of dilution and
agitate the hell out of it. There will be little acutance.
