Importing Mamiya into US

"Under Section 526 (a) of the Tariff Act of 1930, the importation of any
foreign-origin merchandise ... "

What price free trade and GAT now then? This'll have 'em rioting in
the streets again ;-)

It'd be a laugh if this piece of isolationist legislation had been
repealed since wouldn't it? Trade mark legislation is 'supposed' to
prohibit (or at least inhibit) commercial importation ... not goods
for personal use. This one shouldn't have survived the US joining
WIPO IMHO (and other FLAs).

BTW: The next piece of bad news is that, having been to Singapore
this week, electronics and camera equipment is no longer the bargain
it was. We checked out several items and found the prices pretty much
the same as on a UK high street.

BBTW: Nikon's tech support lived up to their reputation (thanks
Rolland) by successfully playing telephone tag on their terms which
made it difficult for me to get more information on the 990's
infrared ability. The last message did say that a D1 filtered IR to
50% at 600 nm which seems OK but they didn't say what the
characteristics were for the 990. This does suggest that D1 and 950
colour images will be improved a bit by shooting through an IR
blocker since the concern was for unreal skin tones. I believe there
can also be 'bloom' when a very bright light gets into your scene,
such as a flash reflection.

... and Rolland, I hope you can get your hands on a 990 and let us
know how practical it is to remove the IR blocker without screwing up
the camera operation or CCD surface.

Cheers

Andy
