I was told, as well, that the old E4 process gave EIR just about the same
efefct as AR-5 processing.  When I did a test on this (two rolls shot
exactly the same one processed in E6 the other E4) I must confess to seeing
no difference between the two at all.  At the very least I was expecting
there to be a slight loss in the saturation and a few more tones showing on
the E4, but that was not the case.

Argentum in Lodon (UK) now offer a process which is "The same as AR-5" and I
shall be doing a few tests with this over the summer,(time willing) which I
certainly hope will give better rendition than the E4/E6 processing.

As for the complexity of the E4 Process. I remember processing a few of the
rolls by hand in a tank while at college, and can certainly remember having
to mix up quite a few chemicals, some of which were quite toxic, also the
process took about 90 mins IIRC.  I am certainly glad Kodak brought out the
new film.  We are just spoilt these days ;-)
