This is simply part of the testing process. I have found that with my Nikon
cameras (6006 and 8008) that metering at EI 250 through a #25 filter generally
works best (of course, this will vary with the season and other factors). You
will also want to ensure that the film was not overdeveloped.

This is something I have yet to see. I don't know of any advantage in
pre-soaking the film, as this merely adjusts the contrast (of course, it
doesn't "hurt" the film either). I did find pinholes in HSI, so perhaps this
is a similar problem.
