Hello Gerard,
The answers to all of your questions are in the Infrared FAQ, and
hopefully written in a way that is easy to read :-) The Infrared FAQ

You will have an increased "IR-effect" if you use an opaque infrared
filter such as the #89B, #88A, or #87 Wratten rated filters with
Kodak HIE. Ilford SFX is an extended red sensitive film and is best
used with a #25 red filter. True infrared filters will result in very
long exposure times and very high contrast - if you get anything at
all on the film :-)
