Subject: NIKON autofocus choices and IR
Kirk,
I can understand your choice for a Nikon. I have worked with Nikon's all my
life and I never had any problems with them (I'm really not a shareholder of
Nikon!).
The 80 is indeed not suitable for IR I suspect that the 100 and the 5 are
also not suitable for IR. Other members of this list will react on this, I'm
sure. The 90 series and the 4 are OK.
I own two F801(S)-8008. The are both excellent for IR and are autofocus. Do
you know, that the autofocus automatically makes a focus correction for IR?
When I use a red filter the correction is very little but when I screw a
#87C filter on the lens, the focus correction for true IR is considerable!
So you do not need a IR mark on your lens. It even works on my 28-85 mm
autofocus zoomlens. The focus correction is small for 85 mm and again
considerable for 28 mm. This is something
I found out some months ago while playing a bit with the camera. I don't
know whether or not this correction works on all the other Nikon's, on the
801(8008) it does! This is a great advantage as I always use autofocus
while shooting IR and I do not have to use small apertures for being sharp.
My focus is always pin point! Part of your problems might be solved now!
