Hi,
Here is some information you are probably not going to like. You are going to
have to use that first roll to test. If you are going to have it developed
using the E-6 process, EI 200 is Kodak's starting recommendation. However, I
have found my best exposures at EI 250, 320, and even 400. But I have been
shooting primarily in deserts and mountains from Colorado to California. 200
has always been a tad overexposed for me.
On the first roll I shot, I exposed at 100, 200, and 400. Only a few shots
were even acceptable. So I had to use a second roll to run a test series.
Based on that, I set my camera at 320, and bracket a third or half on each
side. However, 200 has worked fine for others.
So, take that first roll and shoot a range of exposures from 160 to 400 in 1/3
or 1/2 stops for each shot. Believe me, depending on conditions the difference
can be significant. This is the best way to find out what works for you, based
on shooting conditions, and even the accuracy of your camera.
Also, get a filter. No filter is boring. I like the orange filter. You can see
examples of the difference at:
http://www.coolmint.co.uk/infrared/guide/colour.html
And it wouldn't hurt to include different materials and plant-life in the test
series to get an idea of how they appear in color IR. I have been surprised by
some materials. Maybe even include a person to see how people appear. (Not as
flattering as B&W IR!)
Good luck and have fun!
